Elpidio Quirino
The 6th President of the Philippines; From Rugs to Riches
Elpidio Quirino was born on November 16, 1890, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, into a poor family. His father worked as a jail guard and tried his skills at business, while his mother took care of the home and taught her children good values. Even though his family didn't have much money, Quirino worked hard to get an education and went to law school at the University of the Philippines. He passed the bar exam in 1915, which started his journey from a simple guy to becoming president.
Quirino's political career started in 1919 when he was elected to represent Ilocos Sur in the Philippine House of Representatives. He proved to be a good lawmaker and later served in the Senate from 1925 to 1935. During the Commonwealth period, he held important jobs including Secretary of Finance and Secretary of the Interior under President Manuel Quezon. In 1946, he became the Vice President during Manuel Roxas supremacy, and when Roxas died in 1948, Quirino became the president.
Regardless of the problems, Quirino achieved important things for his country. He made changes to the overall economy, including creating the Central Bank of the Philippines in 1949, which helped make the country's money more stable. His leadership had helped a lot of people, including social security and land reform to help poor farmers. Though his presidency ended in 1953 with political problems, Quirino's work in building the nation—especially in the economy had a lasting effect on the Philippines' growth as an independent nation.
